Personal Strategy
Build your personalized risk mitigation strategy
MODULE 6 OF 6
Personal Strategy Builder
Developing Your Risk Mitigation Strategy
Based on what you've learned in this course, you will now develop your personal strategy for preventing airspace infringements. This strategy should be tailored to your flying experience, typical routes, and personal risk factors.
Strategy Components
1. Situation at Risk
Identify the specific situation that puts you most at risk of infringing on airspace. Consider:
- Your typical flying routes
- Airspace challenges in your area
- Your experience level
- Your flying habits
Examples:
- Climbing through Class B shelf on departure
- Navigating around multiple restricted areas
- Flying in mountainous terrain with altitude limitations
- Operating near military training routes
2. Why It Matters
Explain why this situation is a risk for you. Consider:
- What could go wrong?
- What are the consequences?
- How likely is this to happen?
- What factors make this situation risky?
3. Action Plan
Develop specific actions you will take to mitigate this risk. Consider:
- Preflight planning steps
- In-flight procedures
- Tools and resources you will use
- Communication strategies
- Contingency plans
Examples:
- Always request flight following
- Use moving map display to monitor position
- Maintain altitude ±100 feet
- Brief passengers on airspace restrictions
- Plan alternate routes
4. Verification Method
Identify how you will verify that your strategy is working. Consider:
- How will you know if you're staying clear of airspace?
- What metrics will you track?
- How will you review your performance?
- What will trigger a strategy review?
Examples:
- Track number of airspace deviations (goal: zero)
- Monitor altitude deviations (goal: ±100 feet)
- Review flight logs monthly
- Discuss with flight instructor
Implementing Your Strategy
Before Your Next Flight
- Review your personal strategy
- Brief yourself on the key points
- Ensure you have necessary tools (charts, moving map, etc.)
- Identify potential challenges
During Flight
- Follow your strategy consistently
- Monitor your performance
- Adjust as needed based on conditions
- Stay alert to threats and errors
After Flight
- Review how well you followed your strategy
- Identify any deviations or challenges
- Update your strategy if needed
- Share lessons learned with other pilots
Continuous Improvement
Your personal strategy is not static. Review and update it regularly:
- After each flight
- After significant events or near-misses
- When flying new routes
- When your experience level changes
- When your aircraft changes
Remember: The goal is not perfection, but continuous improvement in your airspace awareness and safety practices.
